Exquisite
rouge compact made by Ripley & Gowen
(R & G CO) and marked LaMode. It
is sterling silver and is so marked
on the back. It is guilloche enamel.
The
top is decorated with elegant roses
in shades of pink and tiny blue flowers
surrounded by green leaves. The background
of this art work is white. The compact
measures 2 1/4" x 2 1/4".
The frame of the top is handsomely decorated
with black enamel. This design is also
on the back of the piece. There are
no scratches to the enamel or the glass
on the top of the compact.
The
sides are also decorated elaborately.
The
chain from which the compact hangs has
a tiny enamel piece about half way between
the finger ring and the compact. I have
tried to capture this in a photo. There
is a lovely delicate design in this
tiny enamel piece (measures 7/16").
The
back shows some wear. The back is appears
to be engraved with a circle and then
a bow with two branches with leaves
inside.
Opening
the piece, the hinge is in good condition
and the clasp is perfect. The mirror
shows very little aging. The original
rouge applicator is inside. There is
a small knob inside that moves a metal
piece to expose an plain opening, a
sifting opening and a closed setting.
This
piece belonged to the estate of a friend
and I know it dates back to the 1930's.
Perhaps it's older. It is an exquisite
piece with very little wear.
