About Antique Perfume Buttons

Antique Georgian Crescent Moon pin brooch with paste stones Perfume Buttons were designed and manufactured in the States in the early 1800's, incorporating fabric as part of their design - usually velvet. The ladies of the day wore these buttons on their dresses, putting their fragrance on them rather than running the risk of staining their clothing.

The story goes that during the Civil War the ladies would take a perfumed button off their dress and give it to their loved one, sending him into war with a romantic memento. Many stories are told of soldiers who died with a button in his pocket or stories that recount how this memento kept them alive during those stressful times.

Perfume Buttons were also used earlier in history in France and England.

SET OF 6 FAB SMALL VELVET IN METAL PERFUME BUTTONS

HARD TO FIND SET OF 6 SMALL VELVET IN METAL PERFUME BUTTONS. THEY ARE SO NICE! THE RIMS ARE SHINIER THAN THEY PICTURED. THEY ARE SLIGHTLY CUPPED. THE VELVET CENTERS ARE RAISED. THEY MEASURE 9/16 INCHES ACROSS. FROM THE LOOKS OF THE JAPANNED BCKS AND THE METAL SHANKS THEY WERE USED VERY LITTLE. THERE IS A BUTTON THAT HAS A SMALL AREA OF GREENING ON ONE EDGE OF THE RIM. IT IS THE CENTER BUTTON IN THE FRONT ROW. I DID NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN IT.

Size: 9/16"

Perfume Buttons have the loveliest story. Made in the mid-1800's, they have an underlay of velvet fabric with a pierced, ornate brass overlay. The perfumes of the Victorian Era were oil based, and when used on the skin, would soil the women's' clothing. These buttons were designed so women could dab their perfume on the velvet of the button, thus, protecting their clothing and carrying the scent for a long time. Keep reading…you will love this. During the Civil War, women would give such a button, scented with their perfume, to a husband or lover going off to war. He would stitch it under his uniform collar as a reminder of the love he left behind.
